Apple’s iPhones have gotten a lot faster over the years. But to know just how much faster, it’s helpful to look back and see how far the flagship has come.

Just look at the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, two of Apple’s most popular smartphones to date. The devices were first launched in 2015 and touted Apple’s then-latest A9 processor. And while Apple eventually released later devices like the iPhone 7, the 6s remained the most used iPhone well into 2018.

Now, Apple’s premier device is the iPhone 11 Pro Max. And while it’s much faster on paper and in benchmark testing, YouTuber PhoneBuff decided to pit the iPhone 6s against the iPhone 11 Pro in a head-to-head, real-life speed test for a better representation of the performance differences.

As is usual with these types of speed tests, the testing consists of two laps. The first involves opening various apps and performing CPU-intensive tasks, while the second involves reopening those apps to see if the device kept them open in memory.

You can watch the full speed test and its results below. But they probably end up exactly how you’d expect.

The iPhone 11 Pro Max blew threw the entire test in 2 minutes and 41 seconds, while the older iPhone 6s took nearly twice as long with an end time of 4 minutes and 43 seconds.

In fact, the iPhone 11 Pro model was able to finish both laps of the test before the iPhone 6s was even able to complete the first lap. While the iPhone 6s performed admirably for a device this old, it’s obviously showing its age.

It’s important to note that the iPhone 6s that PhoneBuff used in its test was brand new out of the box. That means its battery should be in tip-top shape, mitigating any performance impacts from throttling.

If you have an iPhone 6s that you’ve been using for a few years, it’s likely even slower than the one in the video (depending on how the battery has degraded and whether you’ve swapped it for a new one during its lifetime).

In other words, if you’re still holding onto an iPhone 6s or 6s Plus, then you may be long overdue for an upgrade.
