Microsoft has rolled out an overhaul of its Cortana for iOS app in the hopes that its proprietary assistant will be able to compete with Siri.

The Seattle tech giant originally announced the mobile Cortana revamp back in December. While it was immediately available for Android-based smartphones after the announcement, it has just been released for iOS on Friday.

The new update revamps the app with a simplified design and a slicker, more minimalist user interface. Now, the app opens into a home screen that displays relevant information like news, weather, traffic, nearby locations and package delivery status. In other menus, the app also puts frequently used features front-and-center. Tapping an icon in the lower-left brings up a menu of “quick actions,” letting users view and set reminders, check news and weather, and use other common features without invoking Cortana via voice.

Not that voice commands have taken a back seat — the app, which opens faster, loads into listening mode by default. Asking Cortana questions or giving her voice commands is only half of the equation, though. Microsoft has applied the app’s clean new aesthetic into how Cortana responds and answers questions. Answers are now given in a minimal, full-page layout. As always, those with Cortana on their Windows PCs can expect the assistant to sync their reminders, contacts and interests across their various devices.

Of course, Cortana isn’t likely to be a Siri killer. Apple’s restrictions — which limits how much control third-party apps have over its operating system — prevents any assistant beside Siri from accessing native iOS services. In addition, iPhone or iPad users can’t change the default iOS assistant — meaning that Cortana can’t be accessed or invoked from outside of the mobile application. Still, Cortana should turn out to be useful for those who have a Windows 10 computer, because of the built-in cross-device integration.

The new version of the Cortana app is currently available to download from the App Store.
