Add the PGA tour to the growing list of entertainment/sporting venues to accept Apple Pay. Already available in many MLB and NBA stadiums, the upcoming PGA Tour stop at the Waste Management Phoenix Open will mark Apple Pay’s debut on the golf course.

MasterCard announced yesterday that they would be bringing the technology to food and beverage concessions near the 16th hole at the event. The tournament, beginning January 29th of this year, is the largest professional golf tournament on the PGA Tour. Drawing large crowds, the addition of the contactless payment system is a win/win situation both for Apple and for the tour. According to Matt Barr of MasterCard,  “(the) tournament experience lends itself well to simple, secure payments so fans get through concessions and back to the tournament quickly.” Apple Pay is sure to enhance the experience for spectators, and the partnership is sure to add a host of new users to the system.

The announcement suggests that the tournament in Scottsdale will more than likely be the first of many to accept the payment service on the tour this year. The growing list of retailers and venues to accept Apple Pay is staggering and may indicate that Apple Pay will become the world’s first widely accepted mobile payment service.
