If you haven’t already installed the macOS Sonoma 14.4 update released on March 7, you might want to hold off for a while. Many folks are reporting that this latest macOS update has been causing issues with their printers, along with problems among monitors with built-in USB hubs.

In both cases, there doesn’t seem to be a magic bullet fix, although some users report a bit of success by fiddling with their Mac’s settings.

macOS Sonoma 14.4 Printing Issues

Users on both Reddit and the Apple Community forums are reporting that after updating their Macs to Sonoma 14.4 they could no longer print.

One Reddit user says that it appears that the macOS Sonoma 14.4 update removes the core CUPS software, which is the system Macs use to communicate with printers.

Redditor nicover84 says that, according to some JAMF discussion groups, Microsoft Defender could be the cause of the issue. Some users report that granting full disk access to the com.microsoft.dlp.daemon in Privacy & Security settings, either locally or via a JAMF config profile, resolves the issue.

So far, reports seem to focus on HP printers. However, the similarities seem to stop there. Microsoft Defender doesn’t appear to be the only cause, nor does JAMF mobile device management software.

USB Hub and Monitor Issues

Some scattered reports from users indicate that they’re experiencing issues with their monitors that include built-in USB hubs following the macOS Sonoma 14.4 update. The USB hubs simply stop working, and no clear fix has been found for the issue.

On Reddit, users are reporting the problem with multiple brands of monitors, including Samsung, Dell, and Gigabyte monitors (so far). While most reports say the USB hubs in their monitors have been disabled, a few users have reported that after the update their monitor as a whole has become unresponsive.

We’ve also seen reports about the issue on X, the social network formerly known as Twitter.

As with the printing issue, there doesn’t seem to be a one-size-fits-all remedy for monitor issues. However, some lucky users report success in completely powering down their monitors and restarting them. (Yes, they actually did try turning them off and back on again. Thank you, IT Crowd).

Other users report success in re-enabling the “allow accessories to connect” prompt in system settings. To try this, follow the steps listed below.

How to Allow Accessories to Connect on macOS Sonoma 14.4

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click Privacy & Security
  3. Click Allow accessories to connect.

AppleInsider reports that it was unable to duplicate the monitor issue with Apple and LG monitors that use Thunderbolt or USB-C connections. The problem also does not seem to affect standalone hubs either.

So, if you rely on a USB hub in a monitor or do a lot of printing from your Mac, you might want to hold off on the update if you haven’t already pulled the trigger. We’ll keep you posted.
