Apple TV Drops a Fresh Batch of Free Classic Movies

Over the past few years, Apple has been adding collections of old movies that Apple TV subscribers can watch for free, and now it appears to have just added a new batch.
Even though Apple TV is known for being focused almost exclusively on original content, there have been reports of it at least exploring deals to bring a back catalog of existing content to subscribers. However, most of these long-term deals seem to be focused on franchises like Peanuts and Fraggle Rock, where Apple adds older shows to its library to complement the new content it’s producing.
Nevertheless, it has dabbled in offering free movies as part of the package, albeit only for limited runs. Two years ago, we saw 51 classic movies show up, ranging from The Accountant to Zoolander.
Some had obvious connections to Apple projects, such as Saving Private Ryan and its ties to HBO’s Band of Brothers, which led to Apple’s Masters of the Air. Others featured actors who have appeared in Apple TV hit shows and movies, like Ryan Reynolds, Will Ferrell, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Will Smith.
However, it’s never clear if those were merely coincidental, as we’re talking about major star power here in either case. For the most part, the offering felt like a random collection of films.
Now, Apple has returned with another seemingly random collection of films that subscribers can watch for free. The precise selection seems to vary by country, with folks in the US getting access to 19 titles, while Canada and the UK get only six.
US Apple TV subscribers will be able to enjoy 21 Jump Street, Arrival, The Aviator, A Beautiful Mind, The Bourne Identity, Charlie’s Angels, E.T., Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Gone Girl, I, Robot, Looper, The Martian, Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, The Proposal, The Rookie, The Sixth Sense, Titanic, Zodiac, and Zoolander.
Meanwhile, Canada and the UK get a slightly different list, made up of Catch Me If You Can, Ford v Ferrari (Le Mans ’66 in the UK), Jurassic Park, Little Miss Sunshine, Rocketman, and The Proposal.
There’s no word on how long we can expect this to last. While there’s always the possibility these could be permanent additions, it seems more likely they’re a limited-time offer, like the previous stints, in which case you probably only have a few weeks to enjoy these — at least for free.
Of course, Apple also has a strong collection of over 300 of its own Apple Originals on tap, from hit shows like Ted Lasso, which just entered its fourth season, to its blockbuster F1 film that smashed box office records last summer. Plus, you can stream every MLS match for free, and US subscribers can enjoy F1 racing.
An Apple TV subscription costs $12.99 monthly following a price hike last August. However, Apple didn’t increase the annual price, making it an even better bargain at $99 per year (which works out to only $8.25 monthly).
