A fix for the bug that is causing the “Chargegate” controversy is reportedly coming in iOS 12.1.

The charging issue surfaced when the new iPhone XS and XS Max devices were launched, but the bug garnered national and international media attention after being publicized over the weekend.

Essentially, the bug would cause an iPhone to fail to charge when it was plugged into a power adapter via a standard Lightning connection.

But the latest iOS 12.1 beta, which was seeded to registered developers today, reportedly patches the issue completely, according to iMore’s Rene Ritchie.

Presumably, that means it’s a software bug and will be squashed on all affected iPhones when iOS 12.1 is officially released to the public later this fall.

While the issue appears to be fairly widespread, it does not affect all new iPhone XS or XS Max devices. There are also reported instances of the bug affecting other iPhone devices, so it’s likely an issue within iOS 12 instead of a problem exclusive to Apple’s 2018 handsets.

Of course, iOS 12.1 is still in beta testing. So unless you’re a developer or a part of Apple’s public software testing program, you’ll have to wait just a bit longer to have the issue patched.

What Should I Do in the Meantime?

In the meantime, for the vast majority of impacted users, simply using Tap to Wake on an iPhone after it has been plugged in seems to fix the charging issue.

In other rare cases, however, Tap to Wake won’t fix the problem. If you’re unable to get your iPhone to respond after plugging it in, we recommend that you contact Apple Support or take the device to a brick-and-mortar Apple location.
