Apple’s iPhone X and iPad Pro devices have been named as having “Displays of the Year” by the Society for Information Display, the group announced in a press release.
The two devices, along with other winners of the 23rd annual Display Industry Awards, will be honored on Wednesday, May 23 at an awards luncheon that’s part of SID’s Display Week. The awards are meant to highlight “high-quality, innovative work” in the display sector, specifically for products available in the 2017 calendar year.
The Display of the Year Awards are further broken down into separate categories, of which Apple nabbed two (and arguably the most prestigious).
This year, the 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models took home the Displays of the Year award, granted to display products with the “most significant technological advances and/or outstanding features.”
Specifically, SID highlighted the iPad Pro’s ProMotion technology, which allows for adaptive screen refreshing rates between 24 and 120 hertz. That refresh rate results in extremely smooth scrolling, fluid motion content, and top-tier touch-response. The SID also noted that the iPad Pro is the first consumer product to field a 120Hz refresh rate and the ability to adapt the refresh rate to content on a screen.
Apple’s iPhone X flagship also won a Display Applications of the Year award, which are granted to “novel and outstanding applications of a display, where the display itself is not necessarily a new device.”
For the iPhone X, SID noted that it’s the first Apple handset to “fulfill the vision of a smartphone that is entirely screen.” It also called the 5.8-inch Retina Display the “first OLED panel to match the standard set by prior iPhone generations,” praising its True Tone technology, striking colors, deep black shades, million-to-one contrast rations, and support for HDR10 and Dolby Vision.
There were several non-Apple award winners as well, including Sharp’s 70-inch 8K LCE TV; Kolon Industries’ Colorless Polyimide for flexible displays; and Synaptics’ in-display fingerprint sensor.
Display Week is an annual industry trade show put on by the SID. The awards week luncheon will take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center next Wednesday.
