According to the display industry on the 8th, Samsung Display and LG Display switched to mass production of OLED panels for the iPhone 16 series last month. An industry insider familiar with the matter said, “Both Samsung and LG began initial production of OLEDs for the iPhone 16 in June, and began to significantly expand production last month.”
Shipment forecasts for Apple’s iPhone 16 this year are around 90 million units, while production of the OLED panels is expected to be about 30% more than that at around 120 million units. Samsung Display is expected to supply around 80 million units, with LG Display providing approximately 43 million panels. The publication says it has confirmed that both companies are on track with their panel production to meet those production targets.
The panels are being shipped to Apple’s iPhone 16 assembly partners where, along with the components shipped by other companies in Apple’s supply chain, they’ll be assembled into finished iPhone 16 handsets for shipping in September. Apple is expected to unveil its new iPhone 16 lineup in September, with Tuesday, September 10 being rumored as the most likely date for the event.
Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max handsets are expected to resemble the current iPhone 15 lineup, although Apple is expected to increase the size of both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, with the iPhone 16 Pro getting a 6.3-inch display (up from 6.1 inches) and the iPhone 16 Pro Max scoring a 6.9-inch display (an increase from 6.7 inches).
Meanwhile, the standard iPhone 16 models will not change display sizes, with the same 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays as last year’s iPhone 15 models.
The iPhone 16 lineup is expected to receive several upgrades from the iPhone 15. The new iPhone lineup is expected to receive a new “Capture” button for capturing images and videos in landscape mode. Improved connectivity, with Wi-Fi 7 and faster 5G modems for some models, is also expected.
All of the iPhone 16 lineup is rumored to be powered by A18 chips that will feature an upgraded Neural Engine, boasting “significantly” more cores. Apple’s upcoming Apple Intelligence AI features require a powerful processor to power on-device AI features in the new iOS 18 operating system. Apple Intelligence will require an iPhone 15 Pro, an iPhone 15 Pro Max, or a newer iPhone model to run the AI artificial intelligence tasks and other features.
In July, we reported that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max could both make the leap to 40W wired charging and 20W wireless charging capabilities over MagSafe and Qi2, almost doubling wired charging speeds and slightly improving wireless charging speeds.
A few weeks ago, leaker Sonny Dickson posted an image showing the color options for the iPhone 16 lineup. The colors shown in the image are white, black, blue, green, and pink, although Apple may use more marketing-friendly names for the colors.
