As can be seen in a series of new YouTube videos that feature side-beside comparisons of iOS 8.4.2 and the latest iOS 9.2.1, Apple’s newest software update appears to promote a more fluid user-experience on some of the company’s legacy devices — specifically the iPhone 4s and iPhone 5.

According to the YouTube videos, which were posted earlier this week by user iAppleBytes, iOS 9.2.1 tends to cause these older devices to boot much slower, once they get up and running, the legacy iPhones actually appear to provide noteworthy performance improvements. iAppleBytes also mentions that iOS 9.2.1 appears to load much faster on the iPhone 5s, which is perhaps unsurprising, considering that handset was Apple’s first to feature a 64-bit processor — the company’s A7 silicon.

iDrop_iPhoneSpeedBoosts_01Although Apple is notorious for deliberately disabling some processor-demanding functions and features on older iPhones when upgraded to the latest version of iOS, a consistently reported problem has still been the tendency for these devices to boot and run much slower than they did prior to the update.

To that end, a lawsuit filed last month alleges that Apple openly touted iOS 9 compatibility with older iPhones, such as the 4s, prompting users to upgrade, expecting a performance boost, only to be let down by the lackluster (or, in some cases, slower) performance of their devices, while not being able to revert back to iOS 8.4.1 after the fact.

Likewise, a similar lawsuit in 2011 claimed that iOS 8 installed on the iPhone 3G rendered the device slow and prone to crashing. And although that case was ultimately tossed, user complaints about Apple’s iOS devices still trickled in like waves with the tide. However, with the release of iOS 9.2.1 this week, we’re hoping (and fortunately, seeing) that perhaps the company has addressed these issues once and for all.
