Today, Apple made several popular apps macOS and iOS apps free for all users.

Thanks to the update, both the Mac and iOS versions of iMovie, GarageBand and iWork apps — Pages, Numbers and Keynote — are currently available to download for free from the App Store. Prior to today’s update, the suite of apps were provided on new Mac or iOS devices purchased since 2013. Apple users who hadn’t made a device purchase in the last few years, on the other hand, still had to buy the apps directly from the App Store.

The update stands to help consumers who purchase second-hand or used Apple devices, too. The previous policy required new owners of used devices to purchase iWork, GarageBand or iMovie separately from the App Store. Making the apps free for all users should certainly help to free up any confusion or inconvenience — especially since Apple has been providing the apps to new owners for at least a few years now.

Additionally, Apple also made it easier for businesses or educational institutions to download and manage the suite of applications. These institutions can now download free managed distribution copies of iMovie, GarageBand and iWork apps through the Volume Purchase Program store — and assign them to macOS or iOS devices that they manage through an Apple Configurator or Mobile Device Management solution, according to a technical document published today.
