This past Saturday, it was announced that Zane Lowe, an award-winning DJ for BBC’s Radio 1, is leaving his position in March and moving to California to work for Apple. With Apple looking to redesign and re-launch its Beats Music service in the near future, it is likely that Lowe will be involved.

Lowe, who has worked at Radio 1 for 12 years, has become one of the most important and influential people in the British music industry. Although most famous for his DJ work, he is also known for his production work, and his ear for discovering emerging new artists. Lowe was recently nominated for a Grammy for his work on Sam Smith’s In the Lonely Hour, and he is partially credited for the rise to fame of artists Adele, the Arctic Monkeys, and Ed Sheeran. His prominence in the UK music scene has allowed him to score exclusive song premieres from popular artists, as well as exclusive interviews with the likes of Jay Z, Kanye West, and Eminem.

While it is currently unclear what Lowe’s role will be at Apple, it is highly likely that he will be heavily involved in the re-launch of the Beats Music service, quite possibly lending his musical ear to one or more of the service’s curated stations. If the unlikely rumors of Apple starting their own record label are true, Lowe’s expertise could be well utilized there, as well. Whatever his role at Apple will be, it’s certain that his talents will be put to good use.
