Apple surprised everyone on Monday by sending out press invites to an unexpected special event early next month.

The Apple media event, which is apparently to honor its “favorite apps and games of 2019,” is scheduled to take place at 4 p.m. Eastern Time on Monday, Dec. 2 in New York City.

The invite itself is titled “loved by millions, created by the best” and features a golden App Store icon.

It’s not clear what we can expect from the surprise media event. The press invites don’t reveal much beyond the fact that it’ll be focused on apps and games.

While Apple has never held an event like this before, it does regularly publish a year-end list each December with various favorite apps, games and other content.

Those “best of the year” lists highlight apps, games, music, TV shows, movies and podcasts on its various platforms. Last year, for example, it picked content that helped shape art, culture and entertainment across the globe.

The Dec. 2 event will probably be focused on this year’s annual list of favorites.

There might be an actual awards ceremony at the event highlighting and rewarding Apple’s picks. (That appears to be backed up by the golden App Store icon.)

We can’t be sure if Apple will actually announce any new products or services at the keynote, but it seems likely that there won’t be any hardware-based or other major unveilings.

Apple was largely expected to hold an October keynote this year, but ultimately debuted its new 16-inch MacBook Pro with a scissor keyboard and AirPods Pro with noise cancelation via press release.

There also aren’t too many other pending products this year, beyond rumored Bluetooth “AirTag” trackers.

On the other hand, Apple could announce some type of new App Store initiative or something related to its Services business. In any case, we’ll just have to wait for the actual event to find out.

It isn’t clear if the event will be live-streamed, as there currently isn’t any information about it on Apple’s Special Event page. That could change later on, however.
