One Washington man’s iPhone X handset reportedly burst into flames last week while he was in the midst of updating the device to Apple’s latest iOS 12.1 software update, saying that the phone “just got hot and exploded in the process of upgrading,” according to a Gadgets360 report.

Federal Way, WA resident and Syria-native, Rahel Mohamad, published the account of what happened — along with images of his charred-to-a-crisp iPhone X — in a Tweet yesterday.

Despite the misfortune, Apple Support was quick to catch the user’s Tweet and responded indicating “That’s definitely not expected behavior,” and asked Mr. Mahmoud to reach out to them for further assistance.

“That’s definitely not expected behavior. DM us, so we can look into this with you,” Apple said.

Upon being reached for comment by Gadgets360, Mr. Mahmoud noted that he purchased the iPhone X brand-new earlier this year and that the device had been functioning as expected with no problems up until he decided to download and install the latest iOS 12.1 software update.

“This year – early January I bought the iPhone and have been using it normally,” he said, adding that his iPhone X was in the process of updating when he plugged it into an Apple-branded charger.

Then, at some later point, “Dark grey smoke started coming from the phone,” Mr. Mahmoud said, adding that as soon as the phone boot-up after being turned on, “it began to smoke and caught fire.”

Mr. Mahmoud noted his use of the same Apple-branded charger and AC power brick that was included with his iPhone X; he told the publication that he was forced to unplug the device during the update process due to concerns over extreme heat.

“When I held the phone it was very hot, and I drop the phone immediately,” he said. “Then it started to smoke.”

Apple asked Mr. Mahmoud to send in his badly-burnt device so that they can assess what’s going on and, of course, send him a functional replacement if everything checks out.

Although rare, this isn’t the first time we’ve covered reports of an iPhone that spontaneous burst into flames.

Though battery health is a serious issue, it’s worth pointing out that the odds of experiencing an episode like this are still slim to none.

Just make sure to carefully follow Apple’s new battery health guidelines and tweak your iOS settings, accordingly, to ensure the battery lasts as long as possible.
