Apple is branching out (pun totally intended) into a radically different way to help protect the environment. Instead of relying on others to ensure proper eco-friendly paper is being used, Apple is taking matter into their own hands. Apple has reportedly bought more than 36,000 acres of forest land, divvied up between North Carolina and Maine. Apple has teamed up with The Conservation Fund to help create the private-sector-eco-safe paper supply chain.

In environmental science the act of replacing what one destroys, or not using environmental resources at all, is called sustainability. The idea is, in effort to be sustainable, that all trees used to create paper for Apple’s packaging will have more trees planted in their place. Apple will also attempt to reduce its impact on the environment by decreasing the use of paper and pushing recycling practices within their offices.

Apple is setting the bar high for corporate environmental practices. Hopefully, Samsung will try to compete with Apple for the title of most sustainable company. Competition is good for business and even better when it comes to environmental protection.
