This week Apple announced that it’s expanding its Self Service Repair program to 24 additional European countries, and adding iPhone 15 models and more M2-powered Macs to the list of included devices.

The expanded program now covers the entire lineup of M2 Macs, adding the Mac mini, Mac Studio, Mac Pro, the 15-inch MacBook Air, and the early 2023 M2 versions of the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro. The mid-2022 13-inch M2 MacBook and MacBook Pro were already added to the program in June.

Self Service Repair is also now available in 24 new European countries, including Croatia, Denmark, Greece, Netherlands, Portugal, and Switzerland. With this latest expansion, Self Service Repair now supports 35 Apple products in 33 countries and 24 languages.

Apple has also made its Apple Diagnostics tools available for Self Service Repair in the US for both Macs and iPhones. This program will also expand to Europe in 2024 and is targeted at users who have the knowledge and expertise to perform repairs on Apple devices.

Customers will have the same ability as Apple Authorized Service Providers and Independent Repair Providers to identify which parts may need to be repaired or replaced, while also testing devices for optimal part functionality and performance.

Apple launched its Self Service Repair program back in 2022, first covering the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 lineups and focusing on the most commonly serviced modules such as the iPhone display, battery, and camera. The program allows Apple device owners to perform their own repairs using official Apple parts, tools, and repair manuals.

To make use of the program, customers are first required to review the product’s repair manual, as well as the specific needed repair on Apple’s support website. Then and only then will they be able to order the needed parts and tools from Apple’s Self Service Repair Store to facilitate the repairs.

To download a device repair manual, simply visit Apple’s Self Service Repair website, where you can then click on “Manuals” at the top of the page to go to the Manuals page and then click on the device you wish to see the repair manual for.

The repair manuals explain how the repair process works and walk you through the needed parts that are available, while also providing detailed information on how to properly set up to perform the repair, the steps required to perform the repair, and what to do if something doesn’t go according to plan.

Apple says its program is designed to “further expand access to repairs.” However, it also cautions that the “vast Majority” of Apple device users should still take advantage of professional repair services, such as Apple Authorized Service Providers and Independent Repair Providers to ensure that their devices are repaired properly and safely.

Apple’s Self Service Repair program has received mostly positive reviews. Even iFixit, one of the most vocal critics of Apple’s device repairability, called the program a “remarkable concession.”

iFixit said Apple was finally acknowledging that its customers can repair their devices without harm to themselves or their devices. “We’re thrilled to see Apple admit what we’ve always known: Everyone’s enough of a genius to fix an iPhone.”
