Apple has announced that it has added its M3 iMac, M3 14-inch MacBook Pro, and M3 16-inch MacBook Pro to its self-repair program. Apple has added parts for Macs equipped with M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips to its self-service repair store that serves the United States and select countries in Europe.

Apple launched its self-repair program in 2022, although it was initially only available for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 lineups. The Cupertino firm expanded the program to include M1 Mac desktop and notebook models later that same year. The program allows customers to obtain parts and repair their own Apple devices.

Apple is also expanding Apple Diagnostics for Self-Service Repair to MacBook Pro and iMac models powered by M3 in the US in early March.

The Self Service repair program is intended to be used by individual technicians that have the knowledge and experience to perform repairs on electronic devices, using genuine Apple tools and parts. Apple also supplies participants with manuals to walk them through repairs of their devices, without the need for a visit to an Apple Genius at an Apple Store location or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

For example, a support document seen by MacRumors covers the replacement of the bottom casing of an M3 MacBook Pro and includes a list of the parts and tools that are required to perform the repair. Apple also offers a detailed list of part numbers required for repairs of the 24-inch iMac’s display, logic board, fans, housing, and other components.

To ensure that a customer can correctly perform a repair, it’s important that they first review the Repair Manual. Then a customer can place an order from Apple for the genuine parts and tools required for the repair from the Apple Self Service Repair Online Store. Once the repair is completed, customers can return their used parts for recycling to receive credit toward their parts purchase.

In June 2023, Apple added the first M2-powered Macs and the iPhone 14 lineup to the program, and in December 2023 announced an expansion of its Self Service Repair program to 24 additional European countries. It also expanded the program to cover additional M2-powered Macs and the iPhone 15 lineup.

M2-powered Mac models added to the program were the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro, the 15-inch MacBook Air, Mac mini, Mac Pro, and Mac Studio.

Apple offers rental kits for $49 for customers who do not wish to purchase the required tools for a single repair. The program provides them with a tool kit for one week with free shipping.

For those Apple users who’d prefer to have Apple do their device repairs, Apple has over the last five years close to doubled the number of service locations that have genuine Apple parts and tools at hand and that have the proper training. More than 5,000 Independent Repair Providers and a global network of approximately 5,000 Apple Authorized Service Providers are now available.
