How To Use ChatGPT’s AI Search Via Shortcuts — No Apple Intelligence Required

OpenAI unveiled SearchGPT in July of this year, promising to tie ChatGPT, the conversational chatbot, into real-time web search results. We recently wrote about how OpenAI’s SearchGPT feature will soon integrate with Apple Intelligence in iOS 18.2.

It’s a smarter way to search, ensuring ChatGPT’s responses can provide up-to-the-minute information with links to relevant sources. Some of us are already left behind because Apple Intelligence is only available on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 models. However, SearchGPT is available for all iPhone users if you download the ChatGPT app. Better yet, OpenAI just added a SearchGPT Shortcut to make accessing the new feature easy!

First, if you want to use everything ChatGPT has to offer without an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone, go to the App Store and download the ChatGPT app.

Now, find and open your Shortcuts app and search for “ChatGPT” in the search bar.
Next to ChatGPT, below the search bar, you’ll see an arrow (>); tap it.
On the next screen you’ll find all of ChatGPT’s available shortcuts. The “Open SearchGPT” Shortcut was added this week. You’ll find it at the top-right of your screen.

Long-press on the Open SearchGPT Shortcut. You’ll then have the option to add SearchGPT to your Home Screen and add it as a new Shortcut. Select New Shortcut. If you want it on your Home Screen, you can do that too. Now, when you return to your Shortcuts app, you’ll see the “Open Search GPT in ChatGPT” Shortcut.

When you utilize the new “Open SearchGPT” Shortcut, you’ll be taken directly to the ChatGPT app with SearchGPT already enabled (indicated by the icon with the blue globe at the bottom left of the “Message” bubble). Now, you can search the web and receive conceptualized results with links to dive as deep as you want.

Hopefully, learning a bit more about ChatGPT and its features will make those without the latest iPhones feel a little less jealous — myself included. ChatGPT is a powerful tool you can still leverage without one of the newest AI-capable iPhone models. ChatGPT integration with iOS will be awesome, but all iPhone users can still access ChatGPT in a snap right now!
