Let’s face it: we’re only human, right? Sometimes we have to use the restroom at a gas station in order to relieve ourselves of the squirms and discomfort that accompany a full bladder; sometimes we simply want to put a pause on our plans to stop and enjoy a nice burger and fries before we carry on with the show.

It happens more often than not, actually. And while both instances are equally risky endeavors — especially if you’re located in a questionable, or at least, for the most part unknown environment, they’re both now easier to make happen than ever before thanks to the latest release of Google Maps for iOS!

In the past, you’d have no choice but to voluntarily exit Google Maps navigation mode, go back in and ask the application to guide you to the nearest rest station or eatery or whatever you’re looking for, and then go back in AGAIN to reinstate navigation to your ultimate destination.

However, as of October, 2015, Google Maps for Android was updated with a feature that allows users to create detours along their route without having to leave navigation mode and then restart the whole process all over again.

And today, well, that same feature has officially landed on the iOS version of Google’s popular navigation app — and it features full, unrestricted support to add detours in 100+ countries where Google offers turn-by-turn directions.

How To Add a Detour in Google Maps for iOS

1. If you’re using an iDevice, and are currently running Google Maps in navigation mode, simply tap the magnifying glass located in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

2. A menu featuring various points of interest options — like Gas Stations, Restaurants, Grocery Stores and Coffee Shops — will then appear. (If your planned detour is for something else, you can use the search option to pinpoint the exact location.

3. When you select one of the displayed search results, you will then be given a new estimated arrival time factoring in each location — all without being forced to exit navigation mode.

And it’s really as simple as that! Now you can stop to take a breather, regardless of where you are or where you’re going, anywhere you want along the way. And the detour won’t effect your pre-existing turn-by-turn directions in any way.

How do you plan to use the new Google Maps detour feature during your next family outing?
