Group FaceTime Not Working? Try This Simple Fix for iPhone and iPad
Toggle Dark Mode
Group calls on FaceTime will certainly make video-chatting with friends, family, and co-workers much easier: Well, if it works that is.
I noticed the first (and only) issue setting up group FaceTime when trying to add additional contacts to my initial call.
The contacts would appear gray, meaning that they couldn’t be added to the list of callers.
FaceTime video-chat attendees should show up blue when they’ve been successfully added, or are able to be added.
If you’ve read up on our recent article describing How to Start a Group FaceTime Call in iOS 12, and it’s just not working the way you anticipated, try this simple fix. It involves your Apple ID and its ability to communicate with FaceTime to send and receive FaceTime calls.
How to Fix FaceTime Group Calling in iOS 12
Open the Settings app.
Scroll down and tap FaceTime.
Make sure FaceTime is toggled On (green). Then take note of the large button below the green toggle.
If the large button below the FaceTime toggle says Use your Apple ID for FaceTime > tap it.
Sign in using the Apple ID provided on the prompt, or sign in with a different Apple ID.
FaceTime will take a while to register your Apple ID. Be patient.
Press Okay on the following prompt. FaceTime should now be in proper working order.
Head back to the FaceTime app and repeat the initial steps to start a call.
FaceTime Still Isn't Working
Make sure the FaceTime app is logged into your Apple ID by following the steps listed previously, then try restarting your iPhone or iPad > First open the Settings app.
Tap General.
Tap Shut Down.
Then slide to power off.
Turn your iPhone back on in 10 seconds.
Head back to the FaceTime app and repeat the initial steps to start a call.
If your contacts were grayed out in the FaceTime app when attempting to start a new group call, this should fix your issue.
If the problem persists ensure that your friends are using iOS 12, and that you’re attempting to reach a phone number OR email address that they’ve connected to their Apple ID.
