In light of our inherent, constantly-connected, tech-savvy way of life, hardly anyone still uses their smartphones for the primary purpose they’re intended to serve — to make phone calls!

Surely the concept of busting out your smartphone and calling someone hasn’t gone out of style, no — those verbal calls have simply been replaced by a slew of alternative communications protocols, including SMS, iMessage, advanced Social Media chatting platforms, and more.

For those of you who still enjoy the thoughtfulness and excitement of a good-old-fashioned phone call, however, there are plenty of ways to enhance the experience of making of receiving them on iPhone. That said, check out our short list of quick tips and tricks to make it happen!

1. Answer Calls Automatically via Speakerphone

Do you ever find that your hands are just far too occupied with other things to answer an incoming call? Well, you’re certainly not alone there — but fortunately, for iPhone users who’d rather go the hands-free route, there’s a neat accessibility setting that allows you to answer all your incoming calls via speakerphone.

To enable this feature, simply navigate to Settings > General > Accessibility > then scroll down to Physical & Motor, tap on Incoming Calls, and finally, select Speaker from the three options available to choose from in the sub-menu.

2. Create & Assign Customized Contact Vibration Patterns

Have you ever found yourself in that awkward position where the ringer on your phone goes off in a quiet place? It’s undeniably quite embarrassing; however, thanks to advancements in iOS 9, it no longer has to be! You can now go in and create customized vibration patterns for each of your contacts. So if you’re ever expecting an important call from someone, but want to keep it as discreet as possible, simply turn the volume off and feel the rhythm of the buzz to know if its “them” phoning in.

To create and assign custom vibration patters for your iPhone contacts, simply navigate to Settings > Sounds. Under Sounds & Vibration Patterns, tap Ringtone > tap Vibration (all the way at the top), and then tap Create New Vibration. At this stage in the game, you’ll essentially be able to create your own, customized pattern — by simply tapping, holding, or releasing your finger on the screen to make your own beat. And then, when you’re done, tap on Stop > revert to the previous page to save.

3. How to Improve Audio Quality of Calls

For owners of the iPhone 5 or newer, Apple has included this useful feature that can greatly enhance the clarity and ease-of-hearing when making or receiving calls on iPhone. And while the feature, in and of itself, isn’t exactly the most ground-breaking thing anyone’s come up with, it should, nonetheless, reduce a fairly substantial amount of peripheral noise in busy, bustling environments — allowing you to hear your callers more clearly.

To enable this, simply navigate to Settings > General > Accessibility, scroll down to Hearing, and the toggle the Phone Noise Cancellation option to On.

4. Make Calls Using Voice over LTE (VoLTE)

While Voice over LTE (VoLTE) connectivity is both carrier and location dependent, it’s nonetheless a fantastic evolution in LTE that allows you to place calls over the crisp and clear, super-enhanced 4G network — (if your carrier has enabled it, of course).

To find out if your wireless carrier supports calls over VoLTE, you can visit Apple’s Wireless Carrier Support & Features Page. And then, to turn VoLTE on, simply navigate to Settings > Cellular > Enable LTE, and finally, select Voice & Data for the sub-menu.
