Lowe’s is finally allowing iPhone owners to use Apple Pay for their purchases at the company’s home improvement stores across the United States.

Although Lowe’s previously allowed Apple Pay payments in their app and on the Lowe’s website, until now the home improvement retailer has held off accepting Apple’s contactless payments service inside their physical store locations.

The first indication that Lowe’s would begin accepting Apple Pay in-store came in late December when a Lowe’s employee posted on Reddit that the hardware retailer had sent out a memo about the Apple Pay contactless payment rollout, which the employee said was set to begin on December 20.

Opened at 5am read my emails apparently on 12/20/23 1600 will start rolling out tap to pay and Apple Pay.

An additional Lowe’s employee responded to the original poster, saying while the rollout would indeed take place, the stores would only accept Apple Pay at the main registers and ASCO. Lumber/Garden will not have the ability to accept the payment method. The appliances department may accept the payment method.

Meanwhile, on the MacRumors forums, a Lowe’s customer said that he had indeed been able to use Apple Pay at two different Lowe’s home improvement centers in the state of Texas.

Lowe’s employees are likely quite happy to receive this news, as many of the home improvement company’s employees had reported on Reddit that they were constantly hearing complaints from several customers who wanted to use contactless payment options like Apple Pay.

One Lowe’s employee said:

No. We do not have Apple Pay/Tap to Pay. (In my store anyway). I love to answer customer questions, but if I have to hear this one one more time I’m going to scream.

Numerous Lowe’s customers have also complained about the unavailability of Apple Pay on Reddit and other online forums.

Are there any Lowe’s insiders here that know why Lowe’s does not want to accept contactless payments at their registers?

Lowe’s is one of the largest home improvement store chains in the United States, second only to Home Depot. The store’s new acceptance of Apple Pay could see some Home Depot customers making the move to Lowe’s, as Home Depot still doesn’t accept Apple Pay or other contactless payment technologies in-store.

Lowe’s customers will be required to use their bank-issued credit or debit cards with Apple Pay, as it appears that you cannot add your Lowe’s credit card to Apple Pay — at least the Apple Wallet app on my iPhone would not accept my Lowe’s credit card information when I tried to add it earlier today.

Adding Your Credit or Debit Card to Apple Pay

Users can add their credit or debit card to their Apple Pay Wallet by doing the following:

  • iPhone users can open the Wallet app and tap the “+” icon in the upper right-hand corner to begin, and then just follow the prompts.
  • iPad users with devices with Touch ID can add a card to the service by going into “Settings” -> “Wallet & Apple Pay” to add a card there. Apple Pay can only be used in apps on the iPad.
  • Apple Watch users should enter the Watch app on their iPhone, Tap on the “Wallet & Apple Pay” option, and then tap the “Add Credit or Debit Card” option.
