Apple’s AirPods Max are arguably one of the company’s most modestly updated products in recent years. Only the HomePod mini beats them out, with exactly zero meaningful updates since 2020 — but that’s expected to change very soon.

Meanwhile, the AirPods Max, the original version of which arrived a few weeks after the first HomePod mini debuted, received a seemingly random update in mid-March — the AirPods Max 2 — which didn’t add much beyond the H2 chip to bring Apple’s over-ear headphones into the modern era.

What’s perhaps more interesting is how many discounts we’ve seen on Amazon since the AirPods Max 2 launched. While the originals had their occasional price drops, the latest cans have frequently been marked down. In fact, it’s been more uncommon to see them listed at their full $549 price tag.

So, it probably shouldn’t be too surprising that the AirPods Max 2 are down to an even lower $429 price in an early Prime Day deal.

That’s the lowest price we’ve seen on Apple’s premium headphones, and what’s even better is that it covers the entire color gamut: blue, midnight, orange, purple, and starlight.

The AirPods Max 2 launched at the same price as their predecessors, the AirPods Max (USB-C), which were released in 2024 as nothing more than a USB-C version of the original 2020 model, with the same H1 chip that Apple had already left behind in the rest of its AirPods lineup.

It’s obvious in retrospect that Apple made that move to comply with the European USB-C mandate, which would have banned the Lightning-equipped headphones from sale at the end of 2024. It’s an open question how quickly Apple decided to pivot, but it left many folks wondering if it had all but forgotten about its premium headphones, especially after its Beats division came out with the Beats Studio Pro.

Either way, Apple’s track record here makes it a safe bet that the AirPods Max 2 won’t be seeing a refresh anytime soon. It took over five years for the current model to arrive with the same H2 chip that Apple introduced in the AirPods Pro in 2022. That gives them the ability to support all the same software features as the AirPods Pro, including Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, and even Live Translation, but they also come with the ability to deliver 24-bit 48 kHz lossless audio over a wired USB-C connection.

There’s no H3 chip on the horizon quite yet, and Apple seems to be happy to be “taking a beat” on its Apple-branded cans, focusing on products like the new Beats 360 instead.

That means the AirPods Max 2 are a pretty safe future-proof buy right now, and if you’ve been debating picking up a pair, the $429 price tag may be just enough to get you to hop off that fence. It’s undoubtedly one of the best deals we’ll see; even with Black Friday just around the corner, it’s hard to imagine them being discounted more steeply at this stage.
