While the iPhone 17 Pro already made its sports broadcast debut last year when it was used to capture some live MLB game footage at Fenway Park, it’s now moving into the big leagues, leading the line to capture the entirety of an MLS matchup this Saturday, May 23.

That’s a big step up from last September, when Apple’s latest pro iPhone model was used to supplement larger studio camera rigs. Four iPhone 17 Pro devices were strategically positioned around Fenway Park during a Friday Night Baseball game between the Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox to capture unique angles where the full-sized cameras couldn’t tread. However, the bulk of the game was still broadcast using more traditional sports cameras.

That won’t be the case this weekend, when the LA Galaxy plays the Houston Dynamo FC. When that MLS match streams live on Apple TV, fans will be taking in the footage exclusively from the three 48 MP Fusion cameras on the iPhone 17 Pro.

Apple announced the initiative today, noting it’s “the first time iPhone will be used to capture the entirety of a major professional live sporting event broadcast.” Although Apple’s announcement doesn’t go into too many details, Variety reports that it plans to deploy 15 iPhone 17 Pro devices around the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, where the final weekend of regular-season MLS play will be held before going on hiatus for the 2026 World Cup.

iPhone 17 Pro will capture live footage throughout the match, including team warmups on the pitch, player introductions, in-net goal angles, and the atmosphere inside the stadium. With cameras positioned throughout the venue, the broadcast will deliver the pristine video quality fans expect, alongside dynamic new perspectives that bring viewers closer to the action, made possible by the small form factor of iPhone.

Apple

The match will be an ideal opportunity for Apple to show off what the iPhone 17 Pro is capable of — areas where most consumers barely scratch the surface.

For example, Apple notes “pro-level video features like Apple Log 2 [will be] used for this weekend’s broadcast,” while also adding that the Fusion camera system provides “the equivalent of eight lenses,” using sensor cropping to digitally zoom into the center of an image without losing any meaningful detail, especially since the 12 MP cropped 2x and 8x zooms are more than adequate for the 1080p MLS broadcasts.

The real secret sauce here is Apple Log 2, a high-performance profile designed to provide the kind of dynamic range that ensures every detail is captured across all lighting conditions — from the glaring stadium floodlights to the deepest shadows. However, “Log” video also acts as a sort of “digital negative” that requires post-processing and professional color grading. Apple won’t simply be sending out the raw video stream from the iPhone 17 Pro cameras, but feeding it into specialized mobile broadcasting equipment to process the signal instantly. It will also undoubtedly be using the Genlock support that debuted with the iPhone 17 Pro to keep every device around the stadium in perfect, millisecond synchronization so it can flip between camera angles without skipping a beat.

To be clear, Apple isn’t doing anything fundamentally different here. This is precisely how live broadcasts are handled by the multimillion-dollar sports camera rigs. Features like Genlock and Log video aren’t Apple’s inventions, merely its own implementation of pro industry standards on the iPhone 17 Pro.

Even if you’re not an MLS fan, this weekend’s game should be worth checking out just to see the iPhone 17 Pro in action. The good news is that Apple scrapped its standalone MLS Season Pass last year, meaning the entire 2026 MLS season is now available for streaming to all Apple TV subscribers at no extra cost. This Saturday’s LA Galaxy vs. Houston Dynamo FC match airs live on Apple TV at 7:30 p.m. PT.
