The camera on the new iPhone 17 Pro models is pretty awesome. Did you ever wish you could use your iPhone’s main (rear) camera for selfies and ultrawide group photos? You can, but you’d be flying blind hoping you capture the shot perfectly without looking at the screen.
The iPhone 17 Pro’s rear camera is 48 MP and capable of super-high-resolution photos. Its low-light performance is remarkable and it includes features like digital zoom up to 40x, adaptive True Tone flash, 8x optical zoom, and advanced red-eye correction. On the flip side, the front camera is only 18 MP, although it does include some bells and whistles like autofocus, portrait lighting, and night mode. While perfectly adequate for FaceTime and selfies, it simply can’t match the advanced photography tech packed into the rear camera. After all, having the iPhone’s best camera system is why many of us splurge for this flagship model.
What if iPhone 17 Pro users could confidently use the rear camera for selfies? Dockcase, a manufacturer known for smart USB-C hubs and SSD enclosures with built-in diagnostic screens for content creators and photographers, is attempting to make this dream a reality.
Dockcase is launching a Kickstarter campaign for a protective iPhone 17 Pro (and Pro Max) case with a rear screen to bring the ability to take “pro-level” selfies to iPhone 17 owners.
The case, dubbed Selfix, connects to the iPhone’s USB-C port and features an integrated 1.6-inch rear 480 x 480 AMOLED touchscreen that promises users precise control with zero lag over the iPhone’s rear camera for professional filmmaker-quality selfies and video. AMOLED displays are known for being thin and flexible as well as bright colors, deep blacks, and fast response times. They’re often found on smartwatches and VR headsets.
That’s not all. The Selfix case also includes an SD card slot for swappable storage with a maximum capacity of 2 TB, although as you can see from the photo above, you’ll have to remove the case from your iPhone to get at it.
Still, a 512 GB SD card costs around $50, which is far less than you’ll pay to get the equivalent storage inside your iPhone. After all, the iPhone 17 Pro with 256 GB storage is already $1,099, and you’ll need to tack on $200 just to get the 512 GB model. Selfix could be an inexpensive way to boost your iPhone’s storage at a fraction of the cost.
Would you carry a bulkier case if it meant having an SD card slot again?
While there’s no official pricing or availability information available yet, The Verge reports that it’s expected to retail for $99, with an unspecified preorder discount for early backers once the campaign kicks off early next year. You can reserve a launch invite here. Dockcase is planning to offer Selfix in Oat White, Blush Pink, and Midnight Black. The impact on battery life and overall heft of the case are a couple key unknowns. Either way, we’re in so long as the price is somewhat reasonable. If you are, go ahead and register for an invite! Hopefully we’ll have one to review soon.
