Well-known VPN service ExpressVPN has announced a brand-new standalone free VPN for Apple’s mobile devices and computers. The new free VPN is built on the well-established and solid ExpressVPN infrastructure. The new services provide solid online privacy, with no usage limits or bandwidth throttling.

The free VPN service does have some restrictions, but it should be more than adequate for many users’ needs. EventVPN allows users to connect only one device at a time to its server network and provides access to a much smaller network than its parent, ExpressVPN. While ExpressVPN provides access to thousands of servers in around 100 countries, EventVPN offers access to 35+ locations in a smaller number of key countries that should meet most users’ needs, including the United States, Canada, Italy, Japan, Argentina, France, Singapore, and the United Kingdom.

EventVPN offers many of the same online privacy protections as ExpressVPN, including the use of WireGuard VPN protocol, which provides excellent encryption without sacrificing speed, a kill switch, a strict no-logs policy, and RAM-only servers, ensuring that no data is ever written to a physical storage device.

In addition to a full set of protective features, the EventVPN app also includes a built-in speed test tool and in-app private browsing with Google, Bing, Ecosia, Yahoo, Brave, Baidu, and DuckDuckGo.

The company says that EventVPN uses Apple’s account validation to validate users and issues anonymous tokens to connect users to ExpressVPN’s infrastructure, which eliminates the need to store or manage user data. This adds an extra level of privacy and security, as your usage can’t be connected to a VPN username.

The catch to this free VPN is that users must view a 30-second ad in the app when connecting to and disconnecting from a server or running a speed test. ExpressVPN says that the in-app advertising works with Apple’s ATT and IDFA systems and, by using a random identifier, keeps users’ data completely separate from the advertising tracking process.

If you’re the type of user who needs a bit more from their VPN service, you can opt for the paid EventVPN service for $10 a month or $70 a year. This not only removes ads but also allows up to eight devices to connect to VPN servers located in more than 125 locations worldwide.

It should be noted that an EventVPN premium subscription is not the same as an ExpressVPN subscription, as it lacks the ability to use the service on other platforms, like Android, Windows, or Linux. The service also lacks certain advanced privacy features offered by ExpressVPN, like split tunneling.

ExpressVPN says it built EventVPN to provide an alternative to the growing number of free VPNs. Many users turn to free VPNs for online protection without paying for a premium VPN service, most of which pose several privacy risks, including usage tracking, as well as limitations on server access and data usage. Some free VPNs track their users’ online activities and sell that information to interested parties, such as advertisers, and a few have even been found to contain malware.

Always remember that a VPN is not the same as a firewall, and while a VPN protects your privacy from outside snoopers, the people who run the VPN can still see everything you’re doing through it. This is why it’s crucial to use a trusted and reputable VPN provider rather than a small fly-by-night operation.

“The nature of privacy is changing materially across the world. Social media bans, censorship, and restrictions of digital accessibility are on the rise and, in many ways, have become expected. Each and every time online privacy is threatened, downloads of unsafe VPNs peak,” said Shay Peretz, COO at ExpressVPN, in a press release.

EventVPN is a free download from the App Store and the Mac App Store.
