While considering an iPhone upgrade ahead of iOS 18’s launch, we did some quick digging into AppleCare+ costs along with the cost of the service types under the plan.

If you’re shelling out for a new iPhone, AppleCare+ should be a no-brainer. Remember, AppleCare+ can be purchased at the same time as your device and for up to 60 days after. Beyond that, you’re out of luck. Even more so if you need a major repair, like fixing a cracked screen.

How Much Does AppleCare+ Cost?

AppleCare+ for the new iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max is $13.49/month for a protection plan that also includes coverage for theft and loss. If you pay for two years upfront, the cost is $269, which works out to a savings of about $50. For AppleCare+ without theft and loss, the monthly cost drops to $9.99 for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, or $199 up front for two years (a savings of about $40). AppleCare+ extends the iPhone’s warranty coverage from one year to two years (or three years with the AppleCare+ Theft and Loss plan). This significantly extends protection against manufacturer defects and hardware issues. However, where AppleCare+ shines is its accidental damage protection.

Accidental damage protection is the standout feature of AppleCare+. It now covers an unlimited number of accidental damage incidents for a nominal service fee rather than the full repair cost.

Just one front screen repair of an iPhone 15 Pro Max exceeds the upfront two-year cost of AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss by more than $100. The screen repair without AppleCare+ is $379 in contrast to $269 for two years of AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss up front. How much does it cost to repair the iPhone 15 Pro Max screen if AppleCare+ covers it? $29.

Battery service is even better. AppleCare+ covers battery service if your battery drops below 80% of its original capacity. Battery replacement for some older phones, like the iPhone 11, costs $89 without AppleCare+, but that goes up to $99 for all iPhone 15 models. Battery replacement cost with AppleCare+ is $0.

If you’re generally careless with your iPhone, be sure to get AppleCare+ with your next device. A drop of your new iPhone 15 Pro Max resulting in a cracked front screen and back glass damage is $499 without AppleCare+ and $58 with it. $499 is over 40% of the price of the $1,199 Pro Max with 256GB of storage space.

Additional AppleCare+ Benefits

There are three other significant benefits to AppleCare+ beyond accidental damage protection:

  1. First, you get priority access to Apple’s expert technical support. Whether you need help with iCloud, are experiencing software issues, or just have general questions, you’ll be moved up in the queue.
  2. AppleCare+ also includes global repair coverage. This is a worthwhile consideration for those who travel often and rely heavily on their iPhones.
  3. Finally, iPhones with AppleCare+ are usually more appealing to second-hand buyers. This might help you justify the initial cost of your new iPhone.

Unlike many warranties, AppleCare+ is a genuinely reasonable investment in the longevity and functionality of your iPhone. Accidental damage coverage ensures you can enjoy your iPhone (maybe even without a case) without worrying about unexpected repair costs. This peace of mind, together with increased resale value, should be all that’s needed to convince you to get AppleCare+ with your next iPhone. Remember, you only have 60 days from purchase, or you’re out of luck.
