iPhone owners who’ve recently locked themselves into two year contracts with T-Mobile, rejoice. T-Mobile has just revealed the results of its 5G tests, boasting that it has achieved speeds of 12 gigabits per second, which is mind-bogglingly fast, with latency under 2 milliseconds.

According to CNET, that is three times as fast as the trials Verizon conducted earlier this year, which in turn was several hundred times faster than the LTE standards most of us enjoy today. Such speeds would allow you to download multiple movies in minutes and songs in a matter of seconds, and promise to provide a broadband foundation for data-heavy applications like virtual reality in the future.

US wireless carriers have been racing to roll out 5G networks and boasting about conducting 5G trials for some time now, mostly for show. Thus far, it’s been large carriers like Verizon and AT&T who have led the charge and showboated the most about 5G testing, even though true wireless 5G is a couple of years away (the wireless industry has yet to agree on 5G standards).

Neville Ray, CTO of T-Mobile, even had this to say about his competition: “Still, that fact hasn’t stopped the carriers from making ridiculous promises to deliver 5G in 2017 and then having to run away from those promises. Watching all this nonsense, I’ve been amazed by the carriers’ complete lack of vision for 5G’s potential as well as their naiveté about how we’ll all get to 5G.”

T-Mobile conducted its successful 5G trials with Nokia, Ericsson, and Samsung. While the tests yielded positive results and bode well for T-Mobile subscribers pining for a 5G future, just remember that we won’t have a concrete idea of what 5G speeds will look like until the industry agrees on standards, likely sometime in 2018.
