Hot on the heels of Microsoft’s Xbox One S debut, Sony may be on the verge of launching two versions of its upcoming PS4 console, a higher-end model as well as a slimmer, cheaper variant, next month. A report by The Wall Street Journal and a leaked video of the PS4 Slim seem to confirm that Sony will indeed debut a less-expensive and smaller PlayStation console alongside the full model, codenamed ‘Neo’, at its press conference on September 7.

If true, the news marks a shift for Sony which has traditionally released one PlayStation console at a time. Though the PlayStation 4 consoles have been hugely popular and have outsold the Xbox One, according to The Wall Street Journal, Sony has branched out in order to capture more casual players beyond its core of hardcore gamers and expand its user base so it can increase revenues from downloads and subscription fees.

The leaked video, which Eurogamer has since taken down citing legal concerns, purportedly shows a working PS4 Slim as it is turned on and boots up its home screen. The PS4 Slim is said to feature a 500GB hard drive, a matte black finish, and rounded corners, though it’s unclear how different it is from Neo under the hood and whether it will feature enhanced 4K graphics capabilities like its cousin.

Sony has not responded to any media requests for comment and has been tight-lipped about the matter. Analysts are conjecturing that the PS4 Slim will probably cost less than $350, pending confirmation from Sony.
