There have always been rumors about Apple releasing its own search engine, but some people recently asked me if I knew anything new about it, so I wanted to close this debate once and for all.

Apple doesn’t have plans to launch its own search engine.

The Cupertino-based company makes somewhere around 10 to 15 billion dollars every year just by placing Google as the default search engine in Safari – and so, while Apple could potentially make more than that with its own engine, Apple feels it’s too much of a risk compared to what it is already making by, well, literally doing nothing.

The only way Apple could think about its own search engine would be if an antitrust investigation took place and the Google-Apple deal was declared illegal. If somehow this happened, Apple would have no disincentive to develop “Apple Search” or whatever the company would call its search engine.

I don’t think this will happen any time soon. These investigations take a lot of time before they conclude, so this isn’t something to consider at the moment. Based on that, I can confidently say we won’t see an Apple search engine in the next five years.

“But Apple was working on it; I saw it on Twitter some months ago.”

You are partially correct. Apple has indeed been working on indexing the web with “Applebot Crawler,” and it continues to do so, but that doesn’t mean the Cupertino-based company is working on a fully developed search engine. Let me explain it to you.

This tool helps Spotlight and Siri. If you ask Siri about something that’s on the internet, it doesn’t rely on Google but instead on Apple’s own system. The same thing happens with Spotlight.

Does this mean Apple is working on its own search engine? Absolutely not; it just means the Cupertino-based company is working on Siri and Spotlight improvements. The better these two features can search for information on the internet, the better they will perform.

I’m really sorry to be that guy, but for those who think Apple’s search engine is a thing, it is not. At least for now. In fact, I’m so confident, if Apple launches its own search engine in 2022, I’ll give away $100 on my Twitter account.

Let me know in the comments below what you think about this possibility. I hope you found this article helpful. As always, have a fantastic day.
