While this year’s iPhones are only expected to feature relatively incremental changes, that won’t be the case for 2020.

In fact, a recent report from well-connected TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that Apple is going to make some big changes to its iPhone lineup next year — including new screen sizes for both of its flagship models.

And now, thanks to new renders of the 2020 devices, we can get a glimpse at what they may look like.

The Size of 2020’s New iPhones

According to Kuo’s forecast, Apple’s successors to the iPhone XI and XI Max will sport 5.4-inch and 6.7-inch displays respectively.

For reference, the iPhone XS currently has a 5.8-inch display.

That means that the 2020 version of the “standard” OLED model will actually have a display around .4 inches smaller than the current device.

The iPhone XS Max successor will have a display slightly larger than the current model.

The 5.4-inch 2020 iPhone XS display may be surprising for smartphone industry watchers. If Kuo’s predictions are accurate, it means that Apple will be making one of its flagship devices smaller. That’s essentially the complete opposite of what you may expect.

Of course, the analyst is describing screen sizes here — not actual dimensions. But considering the fact that there’s not much reason to reduce screen size, this highly suggests that the 2020 version of the iPhone XS could be a bit smaller and more pocketable.

To help illustrate the potential difference in form factor, Ben Geskin put together a set of renders that take the new sizes into account.

As you can see, the 2020 6.7-inch iPhone is only a smidgen larger than the 2018 iPhone XS Max. Apple could also theoretically bump up the device’s screen size by further reducing the already-slim bezels.

But the 2020 5.4-inch iPhone could end up being significantly smaller than the current iPhone XS. In other words, it may be closer in size to the iPhone SE than the iPhone 8.

Other 2020 iPhone Features

Because the 2020 iPhones are so far off, we don’t have many other details about their features. Kuo suggests that the two higher-end models could both sport 5G, thanks to Apple’s settlement with chipmaker Qualcomm.

The analyst also suggests that the 2020 6.1-inch iPhone could make the move to OLED. Other than that, Kuo seemingly expects its screen size to remain the same.

By that time, we could also see iPhones that have made the move to USB-C ports and include advanced 3D laser cameras, too.

One Intriguing Possibility

With new screen sizes and an all-OLED lineup, Apple could take its stable of iPhones in another direction in 2020.

While this is just speculation, bumping the size down on the 5.4-inch iPhone could mean that that device will actually be the cheapest iPhone that year. The 6.1-inch iPhone, if it includes an OLED screen, could take the middle spot, while the 6.7-inch OLED iPhone would continue to occupy the higher end.

Still, we’re not sure what’s on the table for the 2020 iPhone lineup. But based on currently available information, Apple has big plans.
