While the so-called “iPhone Fold” may be experiencing a few production hurdles, most leakers and analysts agree that the long-awaited foldable iPhone is still on track for a September debut. However, while we’ve heard quite a bit about Apple’s plans over the past few years, we’ve had surprisingly few visual leaks of the device itself — until today. Maybe.

We have no idea what Apple will actually call the new device — “iPhone Fold” has been as good a placeholder as any, and while recent rumors have suggested it could adopt “iPhone Ultra,” it’s just as possible Apple will go for whatever is behind door number three. Regardless, a foldable iPhone by any name will be a fascinating device, since it will represent the first Apple device to break into a space that’s been dominated by Android phones over the past few years.

Reliable sources have told us to expect a book-style foldable with a form factor that might lean closer to Google’s Pixel Fold and the OnePlus Open than the more iconic Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series. However, we’ve seen little to confirm this look beyond the usual conceptual renders. Those were joined by images of dummy molds in April that back up the notion of a passport-style foldable, along with a fun April Fools’ fake video that still sat solidly in the realm of a concept design someone built from the rumor mill.

Still, with the device reportedly already in mass production testing, it was only a matter of time before someone snuck a photo off the assembly line. That day may be here, as a fairly reliable leaker, Ice Universe, has just shared a photo on Weibo that purports to be of “a white-colored prototype of the rumored iPhone Fold / iPhone Ultra.”

Although the image certainly fits the bill for the foldable’s rumored design, that also means it could just as easily be a fabrication — a mockup or dummy unit created by a third-party accessory manufacturer for testing cases.

In fact, there are plenty of reasons to question this. It’s hard to tell from the low resolution of the image, but the camera array looks more like a surface-mounted addition than the elegant “plateau” design we’ve seen in the iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro models. There’s also the fact that there’s only the one picture, shown at a single angle. It’s possible the image itself is the leak — that the iPhone prototype was surreptitiously photographed in a secure area — but if the device is actually in the hands of a leaker, we should expect a few more images to be coming.

In other words, while it’s a fun look at what the “iPhone Fold” might look like, it’s best taken with a very healthy dose of salt. The dimensions appear to be roughly accurate — reports have pointed to an outer display size of around 5.5 inches and an inner display of 7.8 inches in an aspect ratio similar to that of an iPad mini, so this photo certainly seems to fit.

Although other leakers have reported the foldable is facing some challenges with the hinge and the circuit boards, neither of those are expected to prevent the device from being unveiled at Apple’s September iPhone event. Whether it will be available right away at launch — and in what quantities — may be a more challenging question, but with a $2,000 starting price tag and a less sophisticated camera system than the iPhone Pro models, Apple may not have to worry too much about keeping up with demand.
