Even though the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus came out not too long ago, the iPhone 7 is already a hot subject in the tech world. There is already much speculation about the release date, the design, features, and even the name. Here, we round up everything we know about the new iPhone that will inevitably come out this year.

New iPhone Name

If Apple stays with their traditional naming process it is likely that the new iPhone will be called the iPhone 6s instead of the iPhone 7. Another option is that Apple will name the new phone the iPhone Air. However, we won’t know anything about the name until Apple confirms for certain.

Release Date

For the past few years, Apple has kept the tradition of releasing the iPhone mid-September. It is extremely likely that they will continue this and unveil the new iPhone in the fall after the WWDC in June. Apple announced the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus on September 9th of last year and the iPhone 5c and 5s on September 10th in 2013. However, there has been some speculation that Apple will begin releasing new iPhones twice a year to keep up with competition.

Phone Specs

The iPhone 7 could have a 3D display; sources state that an Apple supply-chain partner is working on a “naked eye 3D screen.” Basically, a 3D display that won’t require glasses to see. The latest reports on the camera suggest that it could have huge improvements over the camera in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Reports suggest that the new iPhone 7 camera could have a two-lens system that could help users capture “DSLR-quality imagery.”  This lens will also give the user an option for optical zoom for better performance in low-light conditions.

There have also been rumors of a “Joystick” home button for gamers. The idea is that he home button would pop up on a spring and turn into a mini-joystick for playing games. The only evidence to support this is the patent that Apple filed last year, so the chances are not 100%.

Wireless Charging

Wireless charging could be a reality for the future of iPhones. The iPhone 6 didn’t feature this type of charging; however the Apple Watch will have inductive charging. For this feature to work, you would place your device on a wired mat. This idea is not entirely new, however it will be a first for the iPhone as a built-in feature.

Design

Designer Yasser Farahi imagined several new changes to the design of the iPhone 7. Round icons and several different colors are speculated for the new model of the iPhone. The design is not speculated to change radically in the next version, seeing as Apple usually keeps the same design for several generations. The slim, light, and round version of the iPhone 6 is expected to be carried into the design of the next phone. The iPhone 7 concept thinner than the iPhone 6 and 6S at just 6.1mm. Sources also claim that the phone camera will only stick out when its being used.

There has also been talk of incorporating the Touch ID into the touchscreen of the phone. Apple patented a “fingerprint sensor in a display stack in an electronic device.” It is not certain if this will be introduced as a new feature, but it is something Apple has the ability to brainstorm on for now.

Another design possibly would be to use Sapphire glass. Sapphire glass has been used in the display of the Apple Watch, so it’s possible that Apple will incorporate this material into the smart-phone lines. However Gorilla Glass may still be in the running for making Apple’s display. A recent announcement from the company’s CEO about a new development, called Project Phire, is a response to the threat of Sapphire Glass. Either way, you can count on a superior damage-resistant glass cover for the future of iPhones.
