Cleaning the toilet may just be the final frontier for smart home tech. And one startup is looking to automate that task in a simple, economical, and environmentally friendly way.
That startup is called Shine, and it’s the maker of a new smart home system simply called the Shine Bathroom Assistant.
Essentially, it’s a way to automatically clean your toilet bowl without the hassle or harsh chemicals of existing solutions.
The secret is electrolyzed water, a powerful cleaning agent that’s as effective as bleach.
Used to sanitize sushi in Japan, electrolyzed water is created by running an electrical current through a water and salt mixture.
As the current breaks apart the mixture’s chemicals, they recombine to form powerful deodorizers and cleaning agents.
But you don’t have to think about all that. To use the Shine system, users just need to place the Shine Bathroom Assistant near their toilet, fill the tank with water, and insert an eco-friendly cleaning pod filled with the aforementioned water and salt mixture (and lasts up to a month).
After that, all you need to do is flush the toilet like you normally would, and Shine will cover the bowl in electrolyzed water, cleaning and deodorizing it simultaneously. (You can also tell Shine to clean the toilet manually through the app.)
As mentioned, one of the key aspects of Shine is its environmental friendliness. After cleaning a toilet bowl, the electrolyzed water returns to just a salt and water mixture that’s safe for your pipes, as well as the planet. The eco-friendly pods are also 100 percent recyclable.
There are some other great features here, too. You can use the Shine app with built-in water usage monitors, navigate your bathroom at night with nighttime illumination, and detect leaks earlier with a leak and overflow detector.
The Shine Bathroom Assistant is even compatible with Amazon Alexa and lasts up to 6 months on a single charge. When the battery runs dry, all you need to do is plug in the included USB-C cable to charge it back up.
Originally launched as a crowdfunded IndieGoGo campaign, Shine is now available to purchase for $124.99.
