A car mount is a necessity, especially in California where using a cellphone in-hand while driving is illegal, and doing so will land you a hefty fine. According to Officer Juan Galvan speaking on behalf of the California Highway Patrol, even holding a smartphone to use as a GPS is now illegal – “This new law is going to eliminate that all together and now you have to have it mounted.”

Not only is mounting your smartphone for use while driving required by law, it’s also incredibly convenient and makes nearly anything you do on your phone (like using Google Maps) easier than before.

There are thousands of car mounts available to help comply with hands-free driving laws, and they come in dozens of shapes and sizes with varying functionalities – and one of highest-quality car mount makers is ExoGear.

We’ve tested three different styles of ExoGear’s car mounts to give consumers an idea of which option is best for their needs. Continue reading to learn which car mount is best for you.

ExoMount Magnet Air

This particular mount is by far the easiest to use. Simply attach the included magnet to the inner-side your iPhone’s case. Place your iPhone back into the case, and voila, the phone can now be mounted magnetically without the need to adjust physical clamps.

You can clip this mount to any vent, or similar structure, within reach. This mount features two joints that allow for incredible maneuverability, allowing you to truly find the most comfortable position and viewing angle.

The best part about this magnetic car mount, is how strong the magnet actually is. I’ve tested this mount using a thicker than average case, on a heavier than average phone. The iPhone 8 Plus is no lightweight, weighing in at nearly a ½ pound. Even over potholes, speed bumps, and steady rides, the phone stayed right where it should be most of the time. If you need an even stronger hold, use both of the included magnets simultaneously (recommended).

ExoMount Touch CD

I’ve spent the most amount of time with the ExoMount Touch CD, because to be quite frank, it’s my favorite. If your vehicle comes with a compact disc player (that’s rarely used), this is the car mount for you.

Simply slide the car mount into the CD slot and use the wing nut to tighten the mount into place. Push in the levers on the sides of the mount to make room for your smartphone. Release the levers to allow the arms to grip the smartphone.

Alternatively, pressing the levers in completely will temporarily lock the arms into an open position – the red X button in the center of the mount then acts as a unique closing mechanism. Press your phone onto the red button and the arms will snap shut against your phone to hold it securely in place.

The ExoMount Touch CD seems to be the sturdiest of all three car mounts. After using this mount for a few weeks with a massive iPhone 8 Plus, I can attest it will always stay in place, and more importantly, won’t damage your CD player.

ExoMount Ultra

The ExoMount Ultra is a traditional suction cup-based car mount. However this suction cup uses ExoGear’s ExoSeal, which the company claims offers the “World’s Best Suction.” While we can’t guarantee that claim for a fact, we can attest that this car mount won’t disappoint.

It features the same 360-degree viewing angle offered by the ExoMount Touch CD, albeit with a different gripping mechanism. It’s not as easy to lock your iPhone into place with this mount, in comparison to the Magnet Air and the Touch CD, but it works, and it works well.

The ExoSeal suction cup is more versatile than the other two mounts, allowing you to place the mount on almost any hard surface including your windshield. If you’re not interested in blocking your CD slot, or clipping the mount to your car’s vent, the traditional suction cup-based mount is going to be the best choice for you.

Bottom Line

All three options are fantastic. These mounts offer a much better user experience than budget alternatives found elsewhere online, however each mount serves very different needs. You can’t go wrong with any of ExoGear’s mounts. The difficult decision comes down to which mount is best for you.

The ExoMount Ultra is a more traditional car mount. While it’s not as flashy as the Magnet Air, or the Touch CD mount, it does allow you to place your phone nearly anywhere with its strong ExoSeal suction cup. If you’re looking for a mount that you can attach to your windshield, or directly to the dashboard, this is the mount for you.

If you use an auxiliary cord or Bluetooth to listen to music while driving, the ExoMount Touch CD car mount won’t disappoint. It offers the most reliable and steady experience, while making new use of the outdated CD player. Also, the red X that serves as a quick-close mechanism is a brilliant additional feature.

If you still enjoy listening to CDs on your commute, the ExoMount Magnet Air is a fantastic choice. Not only does it provide an incredible array of viewing angles, but using a magnet to mount your phone is as effortless as it sounds.
