Apple is changing the game in 2024. While we already expected Apple to focus on artificial intelligence this year — just like every other company in the world — the company took it one step further and gave us access to ChatGPT.
That’s right; starting with iOS 18, Siri will be smarter than ever, but that’s not all. When Siri falls short, ChatGPT will be there to help you.
You’ll soon be able to use ChatGPT on your iPhone almost instantly. How soon, I hear you ask? Well, Apple confirmed that ChatGPT integration will be available on your iPhone by the end of this year.
ChatGPT Is Coming to an iPhone Near You in 2024
Tim Cook has officially confirmed that ChatGPT will be coming to iOS 18 by the end of 2024.
Cook shared some insights into the company’s plans for Apple Intelligence during Apple’s earnings call earlier this month, confirming that while the AI features in the current iOS 18.1 developer beta are just the beginning and plenty more features will come over the course of this year — including ChatGPT.
We started with some features of Apple Intelligence, not the complete suite. There are other features like languages beyond US English that will happen over the course of the year, and there are other features that will happen over the course of the year. And ChatGPT is integrated by the end of the calendar year. And so yes, so it’s a staggered launch.Tim Cook
This confirms that ChatGPT integration is coming later this year, but unless you have one of the latest, most powerful iPhones, you shouldn’t get excited just yet.
Cook also confirmed that ChatGPT will mostly focus on world knowledge and that the company will only start with US English. However, Cook also confirmed that more functionality, features, languages, and region coverage will come next year.
Apple Intelligence Won’t Be Available on Every iPhone
ChatGPT integration is part of Apple Intelligence, which will start to roll out this fall in iOS 18.1, likely sometime in October.
However, it’s not all good news. While this technology is Apple’s biggest selling point for iOS 18, Apple Intelligence isn’t coming to every iPhone that supports the new software update.
At the time of this writing, only the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max will support Apple Intelligence and all of its new features. It’s safe to assume the new iPhone 16 lineup will also support Apple Intelligence, but we’ll need to wait for confirmation.
For the iPad and Mac, Apple Intelligence will be more widely supported, as those devices will only need an M1 processor or a later chip. That covers every Mac released since late 2020, and the last few iPad Air and iPad Pro models, but if you’re on an older Intel Mac or A-series iPad, you won’t be able use Apple Intelligence.
Get Ready for ChatGPT
While Apple confirmed that ChatGPT is coming near the end of the year, it’s not all good news. Some of us won’t be able to try it out unless we upgrade our Apple devices.
For those of us who can try Apple Intelligence, this will be a perfect opportunity to see what the future of Apple and artificial intelligence will look like.
