Apple is planning to release the second betas of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia on Monday, Apple spokesperson Fred Sainz told The Verge. Sainz provided that information as part of a statement about how some features of the three new operating systems will be delayed in the European Union.

Two weeks ago, Apple unveiled hundreds of new features that we are excited to bring to our users around the world. We are highly motivated to make these technologies accessible to all users. However, due to the regulatory uncertainties brought about by the Digital Markets Act (DMA), we do not believe that we will be able to roll out three of these features — iPhone Mirroring, SharePlay Screen Sharing enhancements, and Apple Intelligence — to our EU users this year.Fred Sainz, Apple spokesperson

Two features that won’t be released to the European Union this fall will debut in next week’s iOS 18 developer beta. Apple will introduce support for iPhone mirroring in macOS Sequoia, while expanded SharePlay screen sharing will be enabled in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia.

Specifically, we are concerned that the interoperability requirements of the DMA could force us to compromise the integrity of our products in ways that risk user privacy and data security. We are committed to collaborating with the European Commission in an attempt to find a solution that would enable us to deliver these features to our EU customers without compromising their safety.Fred Sainz, Apple spokesperson

EU spokesperson Thomas Regnier replied to Apple’s statement, saying:

The EU is an attractive market of 450 million potential users, and has always been open for business for any company that wants to provide services in the European internal market. Gatekeepers are welcome to offer their services in Europe, provided that they comply with our rules aimed at ensuring fair competition.Thomas Regnier, European Commission spokesperson

Apple says that it will delay some features in the European Union due to the complexities of ensuring they adhere to the regulations laid out in the EU Digital Markets Act.

iPhone Mirroring allows users to control their iPhones via their Mac, providing full functionality, including accessing apps, interacting with notifications, and more. The user’s custom iPhone wallpaper and icons appear on the Mac just as they do on the iPhone, and users can swipe between Home Screen pages, browse and launch apps, and interact with the iPhone using the mouse or trackpad and keyboard on their Mac, audio even works. Users can drag and drop between the iPhone and Mac and even review and respond to iPhone notifications directly from their Mac’s desktop. The iPhone remains locked, so nobody else can tell what’s happening on the iPhone.

SharePlay screen sharing allows Apple users to take over the screen of another Apple user, allowing them to provide technical support and offer other assistance.

Apple Intelligence, which also won’t be available this year in the European Union, is set to be released in beta form later this summer. Apple may time the release to coincide with the first public beta, which is expected in July.
