Samsung on Thursday took the wraps off its next generation Exynos 9 SoC, which the South Korean company asserts will bring a range of premium features and industry firsts to select upcoming Galaxy devices.
The Exynos 9810 “built on Samsung’s second-generation 10-nanometer (nm) FinFET process, brings the next level of performance to smartphones and smart devices,” Samsung said via its official announcement, going on to flaunt its numerous advantages including a “third generation 2.9GHz custom CPU, an industry-first 6CA LTE modem and deep learning processing capabilities.”
Following the announcement, Samsung provided a slew of additional details about its Exynos 9810 with 9to5Google, including what users can realistically expect from the SoC on its upcoming Galaxy S9 flagship. Keep in mind that not all variants of the S9 will receive Samsung’s Exynos 9810 — but some, including here in the U.S., will more than likely be outfitted with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 instead.
Though not surprising to us at all, Samsung’s proposed slate of Galaxy S9 features reads an awful lot like the iPhone X’s spec sheet.
Exynos 9810 Specs
- According to Samsung, its Exynos 9810 is built on a second generation 10nm FinFET fabrication process, which itself guarantees as much as a “two-fold improvement in single core performance,” as well as an impressive 40 percent boost in multi-core performance.
- The Exynos 9810 is an octa-core (eight core) CPU, boasting an even more impressive maximum speed of 2.9GHz per core.
- In a clear attempt to one-up Apple’s iPhone X, Samsung noted that its Exynos 9810 employs advanced neural networks for “accurately recognizing people or items in photos for fast image searching or categorization, or through depth sensing, scan a user’s face in 3D for hybrid face detection.”
- The company goes on to tout how the 9810 features a “separate security processing unit” which, among other things, is designed to “safely secure facial recognition and fingerprint sensor data.”
Samsung also touted a few industry first smartphone features coming to its Exynos 9810 equipped devices. In a nod to multimedia fanatics, the Galaxy maker says its new SoC will enable users to record UHD quality video at an incredible 120 frames per second (fps) — a first for any smartphone. Additionally, the 9810 combines its robust power with advanced image processing and upgraded multimedia codecs, which will ultimately improve image and video stabilization when recording at any resolution.
“With 10-bit HEVC (high efficiency video coding) and VP9 support, the MFC can render 1,024 different tones for each primary color (red, green and blue). This translates to a vast 1.07 billion possibilities of colors, or 64 times the previous 8-bit color format’s 16.7 million,” Samsung noted, adding that “With a much wider color range and more accurate color fidelity, users will be able to create and enjoy highly immersive content.”
The Exynos 9810 SoC is currently being mass produced, according to Samsung, which means we can almost certainly expect it to debut in select variants of the Galaxy S9, Galaxy Note 9, and possibly others.
