Apple released a small but significant iOS update over the Memorial holiday weekend. After the recent release of iOS 12.3 with exciting new features, we are getting the standard bug-fix version to patch initially overlooked issues.

Apple published release notes detailing which fixes were rolled out in this latest iOS version. Find the publicly announced fixes bulleted below.

On Apple’s Security page, we verified that this update hasn’t published CVE entries, which leads us to believe that no significant security issues needed to be fixed. You should still exercise caution and get iOS 12.3.1 downloaded quickly. Generally, even if there were publicly undiscovered security issues, it might not be in Apple’s best interested to announce them on Apple’s Security page. This practice of fixing security issues without announcing them, avoids exploits of older versions, and is very common with most software companies.

Fixes in iOS 12.3.1 Include

  • Fixed an issue that prevented making or getting VoLTE calls
  • Fixed an issue that prevented a “Report Junk” link from appearing in iMessage threads from senders who are not known to you.
  • Fixed an issue with iMessage that caused messages from unknown senders to appear in your conversation lists even though “Filter Unknown Senders” is enabled
