In a move that was both long-rumored and highly anticipated, Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, officially took the wraps off the company’s latest and greatest creation at Monday morning’s “let us loop you in” special media event — the significantly revamped 4-inch iPhone SE.

It’s more revamped than it is “all-new,” because the iPhone SE actually adopts most of its design aesthetics from the iPhone 5s — in addition to the “new” matte-coated, angle-cut edges, as opposed to featuring a completely redesigned outer casing along the lines of the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. Nevertheless, however, Apple is calling the SE “the most powerful 4-inch iPhone ever.” And they have every reason and justification to do so.

iPhone SE 4

After all, the iPhone SE is a mighty powerhouse packed into a relatively small footprint. Featuring the same 64-bit, 1.84 GHz A9 chip and M9 motion co-processor housed within its 6s and 6s Plus brothers, the pint-sized iPhone SE also boasts an undisclosed amount of RAM, comes with either 16 or 64 GB of onboard storage memory, and packs in a the same 12 MP camera — featuring focus pixels, True Tone flash, and improved signal processor technology — as the iPhone 6s.

That means the iPhone SE, like its bigger brothers, will not only be able to shoot 4K video, but also take up to 63 MP panorama shots. It will also feature Touch ID, and the standard 1.2 MP FaceTime HD camera up front.

The new iPhone SE is also said to feature LTE data speeds that are 50% faster than those of the iPhone 5s, as well as the full-range of Wi-Fi connectivity. Additionally, as we expected, NFC connectivity for Apple Pay is also on board.

What’s missing, unfortunately, is the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus’s 3D Touch functionality. However, that, in and of itself, isn’t bound to be a deal breaker for most people. The bottom line is: if you’re looking for the latest iPhone’s performance in a smaller form factor, then the iPhone SE is definitely for you.

Surprisingly enough, the 16 GB iPhone SE will be starting at just $399, while the 64 GB version will cost you just $100 more. For those looking to buy the SE in accordance with their wireless carrier’s installment pricing program, the device will run just $17/month for the base-model.

The device will be available in four colors upon launch — silver/white, grey/black, gold/white, and rose gold/white. Apple will begin taking orders for the iPhone SE starting this Thursday, March 24th, and it will be available for shipping/in-store pickup starting sometime next week.

Well, there you have it, folks! Months of rumors and speculation have culminated in the device that’s set before you today.
