Sony has unveiled its Xperia Projector after teasing the proprietary software for it earlier this year at the Mobile World Congress.

What the Xperia Projector does, and does well, is turn flat surfaces in a user’s environment into a 21-inch interactive screen that responds to touch, voice, and gestures as any smartphone does. Lay it on a table or prop it up against a wall and you instantly have a large touchscreen that you can use to watch video, play games, or view a map in its entirety.

The infrared optical sensors built into the projector detect where on the projection your fingers are pressing so that you can manipulate and interact with the screen. The Xperia Projector also comes with a built-in camera for videoconferencing, which is ideal for Skyping or what have you. In fact, Sony also revealed earlier this year that the Xperia Projector is built to work with any Android app. Because it’s relatively small (slightly bigger than a CD case), the Xperia Projector is quite portable and easy to carry to social events or to work.

Rather than draw a user’s attention to a gadget, the Xperia Projector instead adapts itself to the user and the environment, more seamlessly mediating our interaction with our world, which is part of the mission statement of the Xperia line of products.

“Sony Mobile envisions this new category as intelligent devices that understand preferences, activities and behavior, to provide useful and contextual information,” the company stated. Unfortunately there’s no word yet on pricing and availability.
