Microsoft Edge is the software giant’s latest browser, yet it has yet to enjoy mass adoption and use, unlike Windows 10 which has been a massive hit. Now Microsoft is claiming that the Edge browser is a more power-efficient application, arguing that it can deliver 70% more battery life than Google Chrome.

In the official Windows blog, Microsoft wrote that it tested Edge against every leading browser in battery-efficiency and found that Edge was the clear champion in every case. The team in charge of running the test detailed their procedure, beginning with measuring the power consumption of the respective browsers in a controlled lab environment and examining the real-world energy telemetry from Windows 10 devices.

The last step was taking a time-lapse video of systems running tasks on the browsers until the battery died. The result, according to the team, was that “Microsoft Edge wins out in every case, which translates to longer battery life for you.”

While Microsoft is hardly a neutral observer in this, other studies have shown that Google Chrome consumes high amounts of battery life, which is significant because most of us spend most of our time on browsers over other applications when it comes to computer use.

While Chrome has always been configured to deliver speed and responsiveness, which accounts for its popularity, it remains to be seen whether they will respond to Microsoft’s broadside against them by making adjustments to improve battery life.
