When you think of new and interesting tech, you probably don’t think of your hair dryer. The Dyson Supersonic is here to change that.

Dyson’s new hairdryer resembles, at first glance, one of the company’s multiplier fans — devices that produce air like a traditional fan would, but without any blades. Unlike most hair dryers, the Supersonic stores its smaller motor in its handle, reducing bulk and making for an overall smaller and sleeker device — and allowing the head to remain hollow.

But what it lacks in size, it certainly makes up for in power: the Dyson Supersonic motor spins at an incredible 110 RPM. And because the air multiplier system pulls in so much air, Dyson could use a motor that is “six times smaller, three times lighter and three times more powerful than those in traditional dryers,” according to Engadget. According to most consumer reviews, the heat from the dryer is very concentrated, and therefore more efficient. It’s also quite a bit quieter than traditional hair dryers — although by no means silent, you can at least have a conversation over the sound of it, according to Mashable’s review.

The Supersonic also packs in some tech that most dryers lack. Inside Dyson’s hair dryer is a chip that measures air temperature 20 times a second, reportedly decreasing the amount of hair burn and damage. The result, according to the company, is overall healthier and shinier hair, in a fraction of the time — and possibly fewer visits to your salon as a result. The hair dryer has several buttons that control temperature and fan speed, with LED indicators representing these settings.

But although the Dyson Supersonic blows away the competition, one of the main complaints include its unwieldy and long cord — which is too thick to wrap around the device, and takes up quite a bit of space. On the flip side, it does offer some extra length if you need to move around a room with the hair dryer in hand.

The other downfall? The steep price. The Dyson Supersonic retails for an astounding $399, and is selling for twice as much around the web.
