Last night, as Donald Trump secured the 270 electoral votes needed to win the US presidency, a good amount of Americans commenced a mad and disorganized dash for the exit, literally clogging it in the process.

The search term “emigrate” spiked in popularity in the US, as the realization dawned on panicked Americans that a real estate mogul with no political experience will assume the nation’s highest office and receive its nuclear codes in just two months’ time.

Meanwhile, in related news, Canada’s immigration information website experienced repeated and persistent outages. Lisa Filipps, spokeswoman for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, announced that the portal was “temporarily inaccessible to users as a result of a significant increase in the volume of traffic”, which was presumably coming in droves from Canada’s southerly neighbor.

Americans have recently taken a shine to the Great White North– the land of free health care, Tim Hortons, and poutine– largely thanks to the popularity of its Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trudeau is a bonafide internet star, who spearheaded Canada’s heartwarming decision to embrace thousands of Syrian fleeing war, and won the admiration of many by taking the time to personally greet the first planeload of refugees and hand them winter coats.

It looks like Canadians are sympathetic to the plight of Americans as well. As the election results came in last night, Canada’s official Twitter account sent out the following tweet: “In Canada, immigrants are encouraged to bring their cultural traditions with them and share them with their fellow citizens.”

Disaffected Americans can only hope that they also receive a personal welcome from Trudeau should they choose to flee.
