Teenagers are continuing their love affair with Apple products, as recent Piper Sandler survey results show that 87% of teen survey respondents in the United States own an iPhone. 88% of survey participants expect the iPhone to be their next smartphone.
Piper Sandler’s 45th semi-annual “Taking Stock With Teens” survey measures the buying habits and purchasing expectations of U.S. teens. The survey results indicate that Apple products and services continue to be popular among teens.
According to Piper Sandler, the survey’s 87% iPhone ownership and 88% purchasing intent figures are both close to record highs for the survey.
Piper Sandler also says the survey results bode well for Apple. The company says high penetration and purchase intentions are important factors in a mature smartphone market. PS says it “proves the overall stickiness of the product portfolio.”
The Apple Watch also continues to be popular with young adults. 41% of teens surveyed own a smartwatch, up from 37% one year ago. The Apple Watch is a major driver of smartwatch sales to teens, as 35% of those surveyed own an Apple Watch, up from the 31% of teen smartwatch users reported last fall.

Purchase intent also slightly inched up among Apple Watch-using teens, as 15% of teens surveyed plan to buy an Apple Watch sometime in the next six months, up 1% from the 14% that intended to buy one in last spring’s survey. Upper-income teenagers continue to prefer the Apple Watch, although that percentage of teens fell to 39%, down from 47% in the fall of 2022.
Since the iPhone and Apple Watch are both popular among the younger set, it makes sense that Apple Pay also makes a nice showing. Apple Pay is the top payment app among young adults, with 39% of respondents preferring to use Apple’s contactless payment system. The Cash App took second place with a 25% share of the payments market, with Venmo filling out the top three with a 23% share.
41% of iPhone users and other Apple device users that responded said they either currently use or plan to use iCloud+ Private Relay to increase their privacy protection. 24% say they already use iCloud+ Private Relay, up from the 22% share in 2022.
Spotify continues to beat Apple Music among teens. 68.1% of survey participants said they had used it during the previous six months, while 36.4% preferred Apple Music.
44% of survey participants used more than one music service. 80% of respondents said they paid for at least one music service subscription. 44.3% of Spotify-using teens said they paid for their music streaming sub, versus 31.5% of Apple Music users. Apple Music boasts a “higher percentage of payers,” which Piper Sandler believes is partially due to its being included in bundles, like the Apple One bundle.
Piper Sandler surveyed 5,690 teenagers in 47 states aged an average of 16.2 years. Approximately 40% of surveyed respondents were employed on a part-time basis and had an average household income of $67,691.
