Apple on Tuesday officially released iOS 12.1.3, a relatively minor update to its mobile operating system with a slew of bug fixes.

While iOS 12.1.3 is a relatively minor software update with no major outward-facing features, it does address a number of known problems and bugs across the iOS and HomePod platform including:

  • A bug fix for a Messages issue that could affect scrolling through photos in Details.
  • A fix for a bug that could cause weird artifacts to appear on images sent via the Share Sheet
  • And a patch for a bug that caused CarPlay systems to randomly disconnect from iPhone XR, XS and XS Max devices.

iOS 12.1.3 also fixes a 2018 iPad Pro bug that caused audio distortion when using external audio input devices. This bug fix was previously noted in iOS 12.1.2 beta versions, but has apparently been pushed to this release because of the iPhone-exclusive nature of past updates.

There are also two HomePod bug fixes included in the iOS software update. iOS 12.1.3 addresses an issue that could cause HomePod to restart and an issue that could cause Siri to stop listening.

It’s also likely that iOS 12.1.3 includes a number of security patches and fixes. You can find security content details for Apple’s various releases at this link.

Past Update Oddities

The new software update closely follows the release of iOS 12.1.2, which was pushed out ahead of schedule primarily to address features that infringed on Qualcomm patents in China.

iOS 12.1.2 itself was a relatively unusual update. It was pushed out after just one beta version and two builds of the software update were released for no discernable reason.

The final release of iOS 12.1.2 was also exclusive to iPhones. And, interestingly, the first beta version of iOS 12.1.3 was labeled a second beta, presumably since it contained much of the same content as iOS 12.1.2.

But with the release of today’s iOS 12.1.3, it seems that Apple’s iOS update schedule has returned to normalcy.

How to Download iOS 12.1.3

iOS 12.1.3 should now be available as a free over-the-air download. iPhone users will be updated from iOS 12.1.2, while iPad users will update from iOS 12.1.1. Users can find it in Settings > General > Software Update.
