The Council of Ministers of Spain just approved an extension to the warranty for products sold inside the country. Now, Apple, Samsung, and other technology companies will be forced to offer at least a 3-year warranty for their devices.

Apple’s Warranty to Be Extended One Year

According to a report from iPadizate, the warranty period for companies like Apple will increase by one year in order to take the country one step further toward a circular economy.

This new decision will affect all Apple products sold in Spain, including the iPhone, iPad, and Mac computers.

A new warranty period isn’t the only change Spain is going to make that’ll affect tech companies like Apple. The new law also requires tech companies to keep spare parts for at least a 10-year period, and it also increases the consumers’ time to exercise their rights from three to five years.

Digital Products Will Also Be Affected

Digital content will need to comply with this new regulation as well. This new law also states that all digital services must be offered immediately and the contracts in which the user can provide their personal data as payment are now recognized in the country for the first time. This refers to other services like social networks and email clients.

It’s worth mentioning that this won’t just affect Apple. Any company that sells electronic devices and digital products will need to comply with this new law as soon as it’s approved.

As of right now, we don’t know exactly when this regulation will come into force. But it seems it’s going to happen fairly soon. According to Alberto Garzón, Minister of Consumer Affairs in Spain, they’ve decided to treat this new regulation as “urgent.”

This isn’t the first time Apple’s had to comply and change its policies because of a country’s regulations. A recent example happened in Brazil just last year, where Apple was fined and forced to sell the new iPhone 12 with a charger inside the box.
