How Long Does It Take to Charge Each of Your Apple Devices?

Charging your iPhone properly is a really important part of how you take care of it in your everyday life. Doing this right will make your iPhone last longer, which is something we all want.
But how much do your iPhone and other Apple devices need to fully charge? The answer really depends on what device we’re talking about and which model you have. If you’re wondering how long it takes to charge your various Apple devices, then read on for everything you need to know.
Your Apple Devices Always Charge Faster at the Beginning
Generally speaking, most iPhones and Apple devices charge faster when they need to go from 0% to 50%. This isn’t just because Apple knows you’re a busy person; it’s also much healthier for your battery to slow down charging as it reaches full capacity.
For the most part, most modern iPhones can charge from 0% to 50% in about 30 minutes if you’re using the right charger (more on that in a moment). Things will then slow down a bit from 50–80%, and then get even slower when it comes to topping up that last bit above 80%. Why, I hear you ask? Well, that’s partly because of a feature called Optimized Battery Charging.
This feature lets your iPhone or other Apple devices learn your charging patterns so that it can delay the final charge from 80% to 100% until it knows you’ll actually need it. This helps reduce battery aging over time.
However, it also means you might get longer charging times when you really need to charge quickly. Fortunately, you can change this setting by going to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging and then disabling Optimized Battery Charging.
Keep in mind that your iPhone will still charge more slowly in that final 20% zone even with this setting off, but at least it will continue charging as fast as it safely can rather than deliberately sitting at 80% and waiting until later to fill it up the rest of the way.
Your Charging Time Will Also Depend on the Right Charger
In addition to having the right settings to charge faster, you’ll also need the right charger and charging cable.
For instance, for the iPhone 8 to iPhone 11, you can get the best charging speeds with nothing more than an 18-watt charger.
On the other hand, if you want to charge something more modern — an iPhone 12 or a later model — you’ll need at least a 20-watt charger.
If you’re looking to buy a charger with that kind of power, we recommend staying with those Apple sells. If that’s too expensive for you, you can always go with a third-party charger as long as it’s USB-PD or MFi-certified.
MFi, or Made For iPhone, is a certification Apple gives third-party companies to let users know their accessories are okay to use with an iPhone. USB-PD, which stands for Power Delivery, is a standard for certifying high-wattage USB chargers. Since USB is an industry standard, the charging adapter doesn’t specifically need to be MFi-certified, but your USB to Lightning cable should definitely be.
Getting something else might be a bit risky, especially if you don’t have the experience or patience to search for the right charger.
How Long Does It Take to Charge an iPhone?
Now let’s look at the important part. How long will it take you to charge your iPhone? As we mentioned before, this will depend on your iPhone model and the charging method you’re using.
Generally speaking, the iPhone 8 to the iPhone 14 usually charge from 0% to 50% in around 30 minutes when using an appropriate wired fast charger. On the other hand, if you want to fully charge it, going from 0% to 100% will usually take anywhere between 90 minutes to two hours.
Wireless charging is much slower, as Qi and MagSafe chargers run at lower power levels of 7.5W and 15W, respectively. Wireless charging is also considerably less efficient. Expect a MagSafe charger to take three to four hours to fully juice up an iPhone, and double that if you’re using a 7.5W Qi charger.
How Long Does it Take to Charge Your iPad?
The iPad is a bit more tricky to estimate because there are just so many models available. Fortunately, Wolfoftablet did the heavy lifting for us when it tested the charging times of most modern iPads. Here are the results:
- A classic 2022 iPad with a 20W charger will take 2 hours and 45 minutes to fully charge.
- An iPad mini (2021) with a 20W charger takes around 2 hours and 40 minutes.
- Finally, the iPad Pro (2022) with a 20W charger will take 3 hours to charge.
As you can see, it will completely depend on your iPad model, but for the most part, most iPads take around three hours to fully charge.
The iPad Pro was also tested with a 30W charger, and it charged from 0% to 100% in 2 hours and 40 minutes, which isn’t that big of a difference.
If you’re looking to buy a 30W charger to charge your iPad, it might not even be worth it.

As you can see, the bigger Apple Watch Ultra takes a lot of time to charge, likely due to the fact that it’s got such a big battery. Still, if you want the fastest-charging Apple Watch available, the Series 7 or Series 8 are the perfect choices.
