If CNN or FOX News’ patchy coverage of police killings in the U.S. isn’t satisfying your appetite for being ‘in the know’ about one of the most pressing, contentious issues of our time, then don’t you worry, because the notorious coder and data artist, Josh Begley, is back at it once again — this time with a new app, which he’s calling ‘Archives,’ that aims to shine a brighter light on the real prevalence of police shooting deaths in the U.S.

The concept is relatively simple: every time someone is shot and killed in the United States, a notification — containing only the victims name — is sent directly to your iPhone, and is displayed as a Notification.

iDrop_ArchivesPoliceKillingsiOS_02In addition to sending a simple Notification, the Archives app also displays a plotted map of the Unites States — accurately showing where each death took place.

If you’ve had Archives installed at the beginning of 2016, then you’d likely know by now that there have been 37 instances of people being killed by police around the country so far. Shocking that may be, indeed, especially since we’re only three weeks into the year.

Begley’s last app, MetaData+, had a very similar theme to it. The only difference was that, as opposed to police killings, the app sent notifications each time a drone strike was carried out, and killed someone, by the U.S. Government oversees. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the app took over two-years to ultimately get approved by app store moderators, mainly in light of its controversial nature.

Also, whereas MetaData+ relied on info provided by the U.K. Bureau of Investigative Journalism, Archives utilizes The Guardian’s Counted database — which monitors and collects data pertaining to fatal police shootings across the country.

Sometimes they say no news is good news, but if you wish to seek out the truth you can download Archives by visiting this link.
