Are you waiting to hear back from a friend of a friend who was going to message you on Facebook? Stop waiting and start looking. You may not realize it, but Facebook has a second inbox that you probably don’t even know is there.

You could be raging at this acquaintance for ghosting you while their message sits unread in this hidden message folder. You don’t even get a notification when a message lands in this secondary inbox.

The mystery inbox is labeled “Message requests” and may be filled with messages from people on Facebook who are not on your friends list.

Facebook Messenger app opens to your inbox, so you won’t see these messages unless you go looking for them. And they are not that easy to find.

To find these outsider messages, you need to:

  1. Open the app and select your profile picture icon in the upper-left corner of the screen.
  2. Then scroll down until you see “Message Requests.” There may be a red badge with the number of unread messages.
  3. Tap on Message Requests, and you will see these hidden Facebook messages.

When you tap on a message, you can finally read the message the person sent you. You can choose to view that person’s profile to see who they are. You then can decide if you want to contact them back.

If you do respond to that person, you “approve” of that person and they will be able to call and message you. You also can block them or delete their messages if you want to end the conversation there.
