Apple’s ‘Shot on iPhone Duo’ Campaign Proves Its $2,000 Foldable Can Shoot

While there’s absolutely no doubt that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max have the superior camera system, Apple wants to make sure everyone knows that the much pricier iPhone Duo is no slouch.
To that end, Apple has commissioned two professional photographers, Jake Michaels from Los Angeles and Jason Nocito from New York City, and presumably given them each an iPhone Duo to play with and show off precisely what its dual-camera system can do.
In what appears to be the first set of photos in a new “Shot on iPhone Duo” campaign, Apple has shared the first six on Instagram, with likely more to come.
The results are impressive, but there’s an obvious disclaimer that should apply here: These photos were taken by skilled photographers, so they’re showing the absolute best-case scenarios. I’d have a hard time producing shots this stunning even on a $5,000 DSLR, much less on an iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Even so, this should dispel any myths that the iPhone Duo won’t have an incredibly capable camera system. While the precise sensor specifications on the iPhone Duo remain a bit of a mystery, we know that it’s at least every bit as capable as the iPhone 17, boasting the same “48MP Dual Fusion Camera system.”
However, there’s a good chance the sensors have been upgraded at least a small notch above that, as Apple says the 48 MP Ultra Wide camera is identical to the one found in the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, although Apple hasn’t commented on the Main Fusion camera. That means it probably falls a bit short of this year’s standard flagships — at the very least, there’s no variable aperture — but we’ll probably have to wait for the inevitable teardowns later this month to see if it’s changed from the iPhone 17 version.
The front cameras on the iPhone Duo are a bit more modest, with the outside camera dropping to 12 MP, compared to the 18 MP found on the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 18 Pro models. The under-display camera on the inside is even less capable, with Apple only saying it’s capable of “1080p video recording.”
That makes it perfectly fine for things like FaceTime, which is likely all it’s really intended for. Even the outside front camera isn’t strictly necessary for selfies on the iPhone Duo, since you can easily fold it open and use the main 48 MP shooter alongside the outer display.
But there’s every reason to believe the main camera array on the iPhone Duo will hold its own against even the iPhone 18 Pro models for casual photography. Buyers of Apple’s foldable will be missing the third 4x/8x telephoto lens, so you’ll effectively have to zoom with your feet.
The iPhone Duo also won’t sport the variable aperture or Pro controls for adjusting shutter speed, white balance, and viewing histogram, nor will it take Apple Reference Images. However, since it packs in the same A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro models, you’ll get the improved image processing pipeline for third-generation Photographic Styles.
The iPhone Duo also has a few unique tricks up its sleeve, including a Smart Take feature that will allow it to automatically capture unattended group shots without a remote or timer by using AI to determine when everyone is looking at the camera, plus a Kid Cue mode to play a Snoopy video to capture the attention of young children when taking photos.
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for the 256 GB version, and goes up for pre-order at 5 a.m. PT on October 16, with it set to arrive in stores on October 23. You can also prepare your pre-order starting on October 12 to help you move through the line quickly — a good idea for this one as it’s expected to be in short supply.
